Rapid City Wallmart to Close Soon

RAPID CITY, S.D. – In a statement released by Sears Holdings on Monday, the Kmart retail store in Rapid City will be closing their doors in late March 2019. The parent company informed associates at 80 stores nationwide of the closing. Recent closings have raised concerns regarding the shrinking number of stores for low-income shoppers. The announcement comes months after Sears shuttered its Rapid City location in April. SpartanNash also consolidated one Prairie Market and two Family Thrift stores last year. Darrell Shoemaker, City Communications Coordinator, said that the city is looking at the shutdown with a glass half-full mindset. He emphasized that Hani Shafai, the current owner of the Northgate Shopping Center – which houses the Kmart – has plans to bring new life to the commerce district. “In the capable hands of a Rapid City businessman moving forward, we think that this is going to be a great opportunity for some businesses to move in there and work with the developer there,” Shoemaker said. “We think this is going to be a great opportunity – again, looking into the crystal ball for the future.”
