After 48 Kmart stores close in January 2018, there will only be 437 Kmart stores left nationwide, a far cry from 2,000+ before their bankruptcy in 2002. I won't be surprised if the rest close down by late 2018 or early 2019

They won't file by end of 2017, but they will do so by the end of 2018, most likely. They're going to try their best to have one major, final, nice holiday season this year to try and please investors by saying "We're back to normal!" because they closed many, many normal stores this year, that did alright. There's really nothing left to cut. So if this holiday season underwhelms, expect 100-200 stores to close in early 2018...and then the 2018 will be the absolute last holiday season, as a hail-mary pass to try and prove to investors the chain isn't completely dead. At a certain point you can't close stores and keep up mass product ordering + discounts from suppliers. I'm guessing that number is around 700-800 KMart stores.

Pretty sad when schedules are dictated by sales and each week my hours reduced. Down to one day a week. Working at a Kmart that withholds heat and is as cold as meat freezer. Just a matter of time before the store makes it to next list of closings.

KMART is beyond the point where they can recover - look at the stores - they are not restocking many stores - it's just a question of time and they are trying to work out real-estate deals etc. Managers are discouraged, employees are clueless, the discipline is crumbling at KMART. Massive layoffs and store closures may be expected for 2017

In my opinion, it is not a question of "if" but "when?"
